Today marks October 1. Which was the ‘goal’ I’d given myself to finding a job – and I haven’t even gotten a call for an interview yet. Part of it has been my own procrastination, I didn’t turn in most of the applications until last week – so it takes some time to hear back.
Also, this has been the first week where we’ve had “fall” weather. Since we moved here it was still in the 70s-80s. This week it dropped to the 60s. And now I’m learning how cold this house really is. Basically, whatever temp it is outside, our house seems to be inside. It’s 64 degrees in the house right now – and it’s supposed to be a high of 63 today. With our apartment, 64 was the coldest it got in the dead of winter – not the beginning of Fall! So I think we’ll be havin’ to do a lot of energy saving things to make it warmer here.
To stay warm we’ll…
- line the windows with plastic
- caulk up the cracked windows with clear removable caulk
- get all the storm windows installed
- get some space heaters out
- bake something in the oven to keep things warm
- light some candles
- wear many layers and cover with blankets
- drink lots of hot tea and cocoa!
- If things get cold enough, being an old house, we have lots of doors – so we can block off the kitchen and hang out in there with something warm in the oven
October is also…
- National Fair Trade Month
- Vegetarian Awareness Month
- Last night we had a nice meatless meal – veggies alfredo. Whole wheat penne pasta, store-bought alfredo sauce, and frozen mixed veggies (we used the kind made for stir-frying to it’s in bigger ‘chunks’).
- The last chance to register to vote for the Presidential Election if you live in Illinois (hurry, needs to be registered by October 4!)
- Time to visit an apple orchard – we’re going to try a new (to us) one, Christ Orchard! I think we’ll be going this weekend – which is good, I want to get some pumpkins for the front porch!
- Time for a new desktop wallpaper!

Hey, we’re going to Christ Orchard too!!
My friend Becky is in town and wants to go get some apples.
I read your shared items and the comparison between Tanner’s, Christ, and Apple Blossom Orchard! Looked like Christ was the nicest and least expensive!!
What day are you guys going? Maybe we can all go appling-pumpkining-cidering together!

We have done all of these things for 3+ years in our home. The bills are still too high.
