I just have to announce to everyone that Johnny Depp & Christian Bale’s new movie, Public Ememies, is being filmed in Oshkosh, WI RIGHT NOW! If you recall, I don’t live in Oshkosh, but attend school there (so I am in Oshkosh more than I am home really). It is very exciting. Before they closed the streets, we went around and took some pictures of the movie construction.
Apparently Wisconsin passed a new legislation that brought great tax breaks for movie producers, so they flocked to Wisconsin! They already filmed in a small town, called Columbus, WI. And now they’re in Oshkosh – they’re said to go to Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago. It is very exciting, Oshkosh is only a town of 60,000 people – so we don’t see much action!
Public Enemies is a film set in the 1930s about John Dillinger, a bank robber. Johnny Depp plays Dillinger. For the movie they are transforming Oshkosh into a movie set. They will also be using the Opera House and old Bank (can’t remember the name!). Several of our friends auditioned to be extras, and we know of one that got in! Another friend of mine works in Oshkosh at a salon, and they are going to use their hair salon as the ‘whore house’ for the set. And she was asked to come in for an extra day on Sunday for a ‘mystery’ project – she guesses they would be doing extra’s hair – but she couldn’t attend.

Right now I am sitting with in 10 minutes of Johnny Depp! Crazy, huh!? I am not really a big Johnny Depp fan, but my sister is a HUGE Johnny Depp fan – so I am channeling her energy for this, and taking lots of pictures and being the fanatical fan. Christian Bale is more exciting for me – anyone? – Newsies? Little Women? I grew up watching those movies!
To keep tabs, the local newspaper has a website with extras pictures, facts, info, etc.

I agree with you 100% on the Christian Bale thing. I am so jealous!!!! I grew up just outside of Oshkosh and now I live over in Minnesota… It almost makes me want to hop in my car and drive back home. Where in the city are they filming? and for how long? Anybody know? Anyway, can’t wait for the movie… at least some of the scenes will look familular!!!

We have a 2 day vacation planned with the kids for this, not only do they like JD, they will learn more from a movie set than they will in school. Very cool and very educational.

This is very interesting to me. I lived above the hair salon in the early nineties. The apartments were amazing and had the “OLD ADVERTISEMENTS” of a gas station on the wall of the building before they built onto it. I’ve been to that bank UMPTEEN times…….and find this simply cool.
I’m a huge JD fan…..and plan on taking my camera down there sometime this week. Neat how they changed the salon huh?
Wonder what the rest looks like. IN the end, I think it will be fun to say…”I lived on that street!!” Not only that, but c’mon…I remember Johnny in 21 Jump Street, In the Freddy movie and more. This is great for Wisconsin and our area.:)

That is sooo exciting! The upcoming Disney movie Camp Rock was filmed in our small Canadian town (believe me, NOTHING ever happens here!) and it was so much fun seeing the sets and having the opportunity to be involved (as extras). Have fun! It’s like a little piece of Hollywood in your own backyard, lol. : )

right on Main Street! You can’t miss it, they have orange tape everywhere. I went down there about 8:30 a.m. yesterday and they let me walk down the street as they were laying out the fake cobblestones. my pics are here flicker.com/ginamarina if anyone is interested. I saw a group of villagers but no real scenes… but I did hear the gunshots of the bank robbery. Just standing in the wrong spot and the wrong time I guess. I just can’t believe how different downtown looks!

Although I’ve never been to Columbus, Wis., I do know that the downtown area has been protected from development so that lots of old buildings from earlier eras still exist, giving the town a glimpse of history. Great place to make a film set in the past.

I was in Oshkosh during the entire filming and even went to the out skirts where they even had the car chase. I was in the building with the stage hands and seen Johnny and Christian standing right next to me have some awesome pictures of them all. They are the best actors with the best personalities I have ever encountered. They definitely do not fit in the snoody category. I wish I could take him home but his wife / girlfriend sure wouldn’t like that.
